The Zombie Bear's Swimming Lesson

Leo was fast asleep, but his toys were just waking up.

Barnaby the stuffed bear stretched his fuzzy arms. Next to him, Zed the zombie toy gave a slow, groggy wave. Zed wasn't scary — he was just a little video game character with green skin and a habit of moving very, very slowly.

"Tonight's the night!" Barnaby whispered. "The swimming night!"

Every full moon, the toys had a magical adventure. Tonight, they were going swimming in the biggest, bluest bathtub ocean ever.

But there was a problem. Zed stood at the edge of the bathroom rug, his plastic feet shuffling nervously. "I... don't... know... how... to... swim," he said, each word taking forever.

Barnaby's button eyes sparkled with an idea. He grabbed the jump rope from Leo's toy chest — a thick, colorful cable woven from rainbow yarn. "I'll teach you! Hold onto this cable, and I'll pull you along."

The bathroom had transformed. The tub was now a shimmering lagoon filled with warm, soapy waves that glowed like tiny stars.

Barnaby jumped in with a splash. "Come on, Zed! Trust yourself!"

Zed gripped the rainbow cable tight. Barnaby pulled, and suddenly Zed was gliding through the magical water. His slow zombie arms made perfect paddling motions. His stiff legs kicked in a funny rhythm that somehow worked.

"I'm... doing... it!" Zed called out, bubbles of happiness floating up.

They swam for hours, diving beneath floating rubber ducks and racing soap boats. Zed wasn't slow anymore — the water made him graceful.

As the first morning light peeked through the curtains, they climbed out, dripping but delighted.

"Thank you, Barnaby," Zed said, and this time, he didn't speak slowly at all. "You didn't give up on me."

"That's what friends do," Barnaby smiled, hugging his zombie friend dry. "Even when we're different. Even when we're scared. We help each other swim."

When Leo woke up, he found his bear and zombie toy curled up together, fast asleep, still holding hands — and maybe, just maybe, a little bit damp from their midnight adventure.
