The Zombie Baseball That Came Back

Maya's curly hair bounced as she ran through the backyard, her golden retriever Rusty barking excitedly beside her. They were playing baseball, just the two of them, until Rusty did what dogs do best — he chased the ball into the woods and didn't come back.

"Rusty!" Maya called, pushing through branches until she reached a sunny clearing. There sat Rusty, tail wagging, beside the most enormous bear Maya had ever seen. But this wasn't a scary bear. This bear wore an old baseball cap and held Maya's ball gently between giant paws.

"I believe this belongs to you," the bear said, his voice deep and rumbly like thunder far away.

Maya's eyes went wide. "You can talk!"

"I can do many things," the bear smiled. "My name is Barnaby, and I've been waiting for someone who truly loves baseball. This is a special ball, you see. It's a zombie baseball."

"A zombie baseball?" Maya gasped. "Is it... scary?"

Barnaby laughed, a warm sound like honey pouring. "Oh no, little one. Zombie means it never stays lost. No matter how many times you throw it away, it always comes back to you. Just like true friendship."

He tossed the ball to Maya. It glowed slightly green, then back to normal white.

"Try it," Barnaby said.

Maya threw the ball as hard as she could toward the trees. It disappeared, then suddenly zipped back into her glove, as if it had a mind of its own.

Rusty barked joyfully, chasing the ball each time it returned, his fur shining in the sunlight.

"Remember," Barnaby said, standing up, "the best things in life — friends, family, dreams — they're like this ball. No matter how far they go, they always find their way back to you if you love them enough."

The bear tipped his cap and walked into the forest, vanishing like morning mist. Maya stood there, her wild hair catching the breeze, holding her magical baseball while Rusty danced around her legs.

Some adventures, she realized, are just beginning when you think they're over. And sometimes, the most magical things are the ones that come back to you.
