The Zombie Baseball Team

Max had the craziest hair in town. It stuck up like a brown haystack, and no matter how much his mom tried to comb it, his hair always found its own way. Max didn't mind. His cat, Whiskers, seemed to like it too, often batting at the wild strands with her soft paws.

One sunny afternoon, Max was practicing baseball in his backyard when Whiskers trotted over with something in her mouth. She dropped a worn-out stuffed zombie doll at his feet. Max had gotten it from a carnival game months ago, but now it looked different somehow.

"Hey there, little zombie," Max laughed, picking up the toy. He placed the zombie in the grass, grabbed his baseball bat, and pretended the doll was the pitcher. "You're up against Max the Magnificent!" he announced to his imaginary crowd.

Whiskers pounced at the perfect moment, knocking the zombie so it wobbled like it was really trying to catch the ball! Max swung his bat and—THWACK! The ball flew over the fence into Mrs. Green's garden.

Max froze. But then he saw something amazing. The zombie doll seemed to nod its head toward the fence, as if telling him to go for it. And there was Whiskers, already halfway up the apple tree, meowing encouragement.

With Whiskers leading the way and his zombie friend cheering him on (or at least that's how it felt in Max's big imagination), Max climbed over the fence. Mrs. Green saw him and instead of being mad, she handed him the ball. "I think you hit a home run, young man," she said with a wink. "Even zombies would be impressed."

Max ran home, his messy hair streaming behind him, Whiskers bouncing alongside, and the zombie tucked safely in his pocket. Some days, he thought, the best teammates were the ones who believed in you—even if they were stuffed cats and imaginary zombie friends.

That night, Max brushed his crazy hair and set the zombie on his nightstand. Whiskers curled up at the foot of his bed, and Max dreamed of baseball games where everyone played, nobody was left out, and sometimes, just sometimes, toys came to life to help you be brave.
