The Zombie Baseball Team
Lily found an old TV cable in her attic while searching for her baseball glove. It was dusty and coiled like a sleeping snake. She wondered where it led.
That night, she plugged it into her television. The screen flickered with sparkles and showed something magical: a baseball game under moonlight, but the players looked different. They had pale green faces and moved slowly—zombies!
Lily wasn't scared. These weren't scary movie zombies. They were the Zombie Baseball Team, and they looked lonely. No one wanted to play with them because of how they looked.
One zombie pitcher, whose name was Zim, looked right at Lily through the screen. He raised his glove and waved. Lily waved back, and suddenly she could hear him.
"Will you play with us?" Zim asked. "We love baseball, but everyone runs away."
Lily grabbed her baseball glove and reached through the screen—magic! She stepped onto the field where the air smelled like popcorn and autumn leaves.
"I'll play!" she said. "First base!"
The game was amazing. Zim pitched slowly but carefully. The zombie players cheered with quiet, friendly groans. Lily caught a ball and ran to home plate, sliding through magical dust that made her giggle.
"You're really good," Zim said, smiling. "And you didn't run away."
"Why would I?" Lily asked. "You're just kids who love baseball, like me."
The zombies looked at each other. No one had ever said that before.
Lily visited them every night after that. She taught them batting practice. They taught her patience. The cable in her attic had connected her to the best friends she'd ever found.
Sometimes the scariest-looking things are the most wonderful, Lily learned. You just have to be brave enough to say hello.
