The Zombie Baseball League

Leo sat on the edge of his plate, pushing the green spinach around with his fork. He hated spinach. He hated it almost as much as he hated baseball practice, which was saying a lot.

"Eat your vegetables, Leo," his mom said. "They'll make you strong."

Leo sighed and took a tiny bite. Suddenly, something strange happened. His skin started to glow a soft green, like fireflies on a summer night. Then he heard a voice behind him.

"Finally! Someone who ate the magic spinach!"

Leo turned around and gasped. Standing there was a zombie – but not a scary one. This zombie wore a tattered baseball uniform and held an old, dusty glove. His skin was a friendly shade of purple, and his smile was warm.

"I'm Zed," the zombie said. "And you've just been invited to the Midnight Baseball League!"

Before Leo could answer, Zed grabbed his hand. The backyard melted away like candy in warm water. Suddenly, they were standing on a baseball field made of swirling clouds. Above them, stars twinkled like tiny baseballs.

"Welcome to the Sky League!" Zed announced. Other zombie players waved from the field – some were blue, some pink, some silver. They all looked different, but they all smiled the same friendly smile.

"But I'm not good at baseball," Leo said.

"That's why we chose you," Zed said gently. "The magic spinach doesn't make you perfect. It helps you see that everyone struggles – even zombies. Even me."

The game began. Leo's first turn at bat, he swung and missed. The ball was actually a tiny star that sparkled as it flew past. He felt his face get hot.

"It's okay!" Zed called from the pitcher's mound. "Even the best players strike out. What matters is trying again!"

Leo took a deep breath. He remembered the spinach. He thought about how hard it was to try something new – like eating vegetables, or making friends, or standing up to bat when you're scared.

He swung again. CRACK! The star-ball sailed through the clouds, and Leo ran as fast as he could. His feet felt light, like he was swimming through the sparkly air. He rounded the bases – first, second, third – and slid home just as the silver-tagged zombie caught the ball.

"SAFE!" everyone cheered.

After the game, Zed sat beside Leo on a cloud-bench. "You know what, Leo? Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means you're scared, but you try anyway. That's what makes you a real player – in baseball and in life."

Leo thought about the spinach he'd hated, the game he'd feared, and the zombie friends he'd made. Maybe trying new things wasn't so scary after all. Maybe it was magical.

"Same time next week?" Zed asked, his purple eyes twinkling.

Leo grinned. "Only if I can bring more spinach."
