The Wild Menagerie

Elena stared at the holographic rendering of her resignation letter, the cursor hovering over SEND. Three years at Apex Acquisitions had drained something essential from her—maybe her soul, maybe just her capacity to give a damn.

"You're about to become a stray **dog** without a bone," Marcus had warned yesterday, leaning against her doorway with that predatory confidence that made him excellent at corporate raiding and terrible at friendship. "The industry is small, Elena. I can make sure you never work in this town again."

She'd laughed. Actually laughed. Marcus didn't know she'd already interviewed with their biggest competitor—the one he called "that **fox** in the henhouse" because they'd poached three major clients last quarter.

The office was empty at 9 PM, as usual. Just Elena and the cleaning crew and her own second thoughts. She'd **bear** witness to enough colleagues' nervous breakdowns, enough emergency room visits from stress-induced heart attacks, enough marriages dissolved by late nights and impossible quotas. The thought of another Monday morning team huddle where they used words like "synergy" and "crush it" made her physically ill.

Her phone buzzed. David. The husband she'd barely seen in six months.

"I made your mother's recipe," his voicemail said. "Like you used to love. I'll keep it warm. Call me."

The tenderness in his voice cracked something open inside her. She remembered their wedding day, how he'd promised to build a life that felt like home, not a battlefield. What had she built instead?

The cursor moved.

SECONDS LATER, the email sent. The weight that had settled across her shoulders since her first day—the weight of expectations, of performance metrics, of proving she belonged in rooms full of men who'd never had to prove anything—lifted like morning fog.

Elena stood, stretched, turned off her office lights for the last time.

The hallway stretched toward freedom, toward whatever came next, toward a life she might actually recognize as her own.
