The Wellness Trap

Maya stared at the amber **vitamin** D capsule in her palm, its golden contents promising energy she hadn't felt in three years of working at Vitality Corp. The office hummed around her—a pyramid of desks and desperate smiles, each level feeding the one above it.

"You coming to drinks?" Chloe asked, leaning against Maya's cubicle. They called themselves **friends**, but Maya knew the score. Chloe had been recruited from the same university cohort, same desperate hunger for success. Now Chloe was two levels up in the corporate structure, and every conversation felt like reconnaissance.

"Can't," Maya said. "Big presentation tomorrow."

Chloe's expression flickered—something like relief disguised as disappointment. "Rain check then. You know, Elena's spot opens up next month. Might be worth... reaching out."

The unspoken message: start climbing. Elena had been let go yesterday, escorted out with her cardboard box of personal items. No one spoke her name anymore. She'd become a cautionary tale about hitting your ceiling at Vitality Corp.

Maya walked home through rain that felt like **water** trying to wash away the city's grime, but it only slicked the streets into mirrors reflecting hollow versions of passersby. Her apartment greeted her with the one relationship that hadn't transactional conditions: Barnaby, her tabby **cat**, who wound around her ankles with demanding affection, his purr like a small engine of genuine warmth.

She cracked open a bottle of wine instead of making dinner, letting the liquid dull the edges of her thoughts. The pyramid scheme of her life had become so elaborate she could no longer see the bottom. Corporate ladders were just pyramids built from human ambition, and she was somewhere in the middle, neither crushed by the weight nor enjoying the view from the top.

Barnaby jumped onto her lap, and something broke open in her chest. She'd been climbing for three years, trading authenticity for advancement, real connection for networking, her soul for a corner office she was told she should want.

Tomorrow, she would resign. Tomorrow, she'd tell Chloe that some things weren't worth the climb. But tonight, she held onto her cat and let herself finally, honestly, cry.
