The Wellness Retreat

The papaya sat untouched on the white ceramic plate, its orange flesh glistening under the relentless tropical sun. Mark watched her push it around with her fork, the juice staining the tines like evidence of a crime neither would acknowledge.

'You need your vitamins,' he said, the words landing heavily between them. They'd been saying this to each other for months — about supplements, about sleep, about the marriage itself. As if proper nutrition could fix what had broken somewhere between the promotion and the miscarriage, in that year of silence that had hollowed out their bed.

Elena looked up, her hair — once so dark it seemed to absorb light — now streaked with silver she hadn't bothered to dye since the winter. The resort brochure had promised rejuvenation. Instead, she felt like she was aging in real-time, each wrinkle a reminder of time neither of them could claw back.

'I'm going swimming,' she said, standing up. Her chair scraped against the stone patio.

'Maybe later.' His phone was already in his hand, the blue light casting shadows across his face. 'I have that call.'

The call. The call that happened every morning of their vacation, urgent and incomprehensible, a tether to the world that still wanted something from him.

Elena walked to the pool alone. The water was impossibly blue, chlorinated and artificial. She slipped beneath the surface, the silence instant and complete. Down here, no one asked if she was okay. No one offered her vitamin supplements or gentle reminders about self-care. The water held her weightless, suspended between the woman she'd been and the one she was becoming. She opened her eyes and saw the distorted figure of her husband at the edge, phone to his ear, mouth moving in words she couldn't hear. She thought about staying under. Just for a moment longer. Then she surfaced, gasping, into the blinding light of another day she didn't know how to survive anymore.
