The Wellness Retreat

Maya stood in the breakroom of Vitality Labs, staring at the sad container of chopped papaya in the fridge. Her hair—once thick and jet-black—now fell in clumps every time she showered. At 34, she wasn't supposed to be Googling 'female pattern baldness' during lunch breaks.

"You taking your vitamin D?" Sarah asked, sliding onto the stool beside her. They'd been friends since college, but lately Sarah's enthusiasm for their startup's wellness products made Maya want to scream.

"I'm eating real food," Maya said, gesturing at her spinach salad. "Unlike some people who think supplements are a replacement for actual meals."

Sarah's smile faltered. She'd invested everything in this company. Their new product: a papaya-enzyme supplement guaranteed to 'restore vitality.' Maya had seen the lab reports. The papaya was sourced from the cheapest distributor possible.

"My mom called," Sarah said quietly. "She's starting chemotherapy."

Maya's hand froze mid-fork. "Oh god. Sarah, I'm so—"

"She believes in this stuff," Sarah continued, her voice cracking. "Buys all our products. Swears by the vitamin blends. Even the papaya enzyme."

The room swam. Maya thought about her own mother, how she'd spent thousands on supplements during her cancer treatment. How she'd died anyway, clutching a bottle of 'immune-boosting' pills while her organs shut down.

"Sarah, I can't keep doing this," Maya heard herself say. "Selling people false hope. We're preying on sick people."

"It's not false hope," Sarah said, but her eyes pleaded for agreement.

"It is." Maya touched her friend's arm. "And you know it."

Later that night, Maya submitted her resignation. She kept one papaya-enzyme bottle on her desk—a reminder of the line between friendship and integrity, and how easily it blurred in the name of staying alive.
