The Wellness Pyramid

The corporate wellness pyramid loomed over Elena's desk—a tiered display of vitamin supplements and protein powders that HR had installed as part of the company's 'Holistic Health Initiative.' Three years ago, she'd rolled her eyes at it. Now, at thirty-four, after two miscarriages and a promotion that required sixty-hour weeks, she found herself actually considering the Vitamin D3 gummies during her afternoon crashes.

The orange sunset bled through her office window as she packed up, another day of pretending to care about quarterly projections while her body seemed to be quietly dismantling itself. Her phone buzzed—Daniel from Accounting. They'd been having what he called 'coffee breaks' and what she'd started thinking of as 'the only thing keeping me from walking into the ocean.'

'Me at the food truck?' his message read.

Elena found him outside, nursing a spinach wrap that was falling apart in his hands. He looked terrible—tie undone, circles under his eyes, but he still managed that smile that made her chest ache. They'd been dancing around it for months: the grief of his divorce, the hollow space where her fertility used to be, the way their hands brushed when sharing documents.

'Some pyramid scheme wellness coach tried to sell me essential oils for my depression today,' Daniel said, gesturing with his sandwich. 'Said they'd align my chakras or some shit. I almost bought them.' He laughed, dark and knowing.

Elena touched his wrist, just for a moment. 'We could just get drunk instead.'

'Yeah,' he said, covering her hand with his. 'We could just get drunk instead.'

The orange light caught his profile, and she realized she didn't want to be alone in her apartment with her vitamins and her anxiety and her slowly crystallizing ambition. She wanted to be here, in this messy, glowing moment with someone who understood that sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is stop pretending everything's fine.

'Spinach gets stuck in your teeth,' she said suddenly.

Daniel grinned, green between his front teeth. 'I know. I was hoping you'd tell me.'

And just like that, the pyramid didn't seem so tall anymore.
