The Wellness Pyramid

Emma stood at the edge of the infinity pool, water lapping against the concrete, watching him play padel on the court below. David's shirt clung to his back, sweat mapping the geography of exertion. She'd met him three months ago at the vitamin MLM conference where he'd been serving drinks, his eyes too knowing for a bartender.

"You're drowning in it, aren't you?" he'd said, gesturing to her pyramid scheme presentation. She'd laughed, but something in her chest tightened.

Now, after weeks of meetings at coffee shops, after he'd helped her debug the company's encryption for "fun," after she'd told him things she'd never told anyone—the pyramid scheme was crumbling. The FBI had arrived that morning. Emma had fled to the resort where they'd first kissed, where he was supposedly working again.

She'd thought they were having an affair. She'd thought he was her escape from a life of selling overpriced vitamins to desperate people, from the lies she told herself every morning in the mirror.

David looked up, caught her watching. His expression wasn't surprise. It was the same calculating look he'd given her that first night, the one she'd mistaken for interest. The one she'd realized too late was assessment.

Emma's phone buzzed. A message from her lawyer: "He's not a bartender. He's been investigating your company for eighteen months. Corporate espionage."

The water below reflected a sky darkening with approaching rain. Emma stepped back from the edge, not into the water but toward the exit. She'd built her life on a pyramid of lies, but at least she'd built it herself. That was more than David could say—he'd just been climbing hers.

Outside, the first drops fell. Emma didn't run. She walked into the rain, letting it wash away the vitamin dreams and the spy who'd never really loved her, finally ready to build something real.
