The Wellness Pyramid

Elena held up the bottle of sunshine-colored pills. 'These vitamins changed everything, Marcus. You'd feel different too if you joined the pyramid.'

Marcus stared at his iphone instead of her, thumb hovering over his ex-wife's text. 'I'm going running.'

'You're always running,' she said, voice tight. 'From jobs, from conversations, from anything that asks you to be present.'

He laced his shoes anyway, his ritual escape. The woods behind their subdivision offered a different kind of silence—not Elena's失望, not his father's death, not the layoff notice in his inbox. Just the rhythmic thud of his feet on pine needles, his breath fogging the morning air.

Then he saw the bear.

It emerged from the fog like something ancient, something that didn't care about his 401k or his strained marriage. The bear paused, dark eyes meeting his, and Marcus understood suddenly that he was the interloper here. This creature carried its own weight, its own wisdom, without needing to escape anything.

He didn't run. He stood perfectly still, heart hammering, and felt something crack open in his chest.

The bear ambled away, indifferent to his epiphany.

When Marcus returned, Elena was still at the kitchen table, sorting supplements into tidy daily packs. She looked up, something unreadable in her face.

'I'm sorry,' he said, and meant it. Not for the iphone or the running or the resistance to her vitamin schemes. But for the years he'd spent halfway out the door, always preparing to flee.

She didn't smile. 'Start with one pack,' she said, sliding a small plastic bag across the table. 'See how it goes.'

He swallowed them with tap water, and she made coffee, and they sat together in the kitchen not saying anything, and for the first time in years, Marcus felt something like enough.
