The Wellness Protocol
Elena found the hair in his brush—not his coarse dark strands, but something finer, lighter. A single blond hair that caught the morning sun through their bathroom window. She stared at it for thirty seconds before she understood what she was seeing.
Three days later, she discovered the truth about Marcus's new job. The 'wellness consulting firm' was actually a private intelligence agency. His corporate clients paid him to infiltrate their competitors, and Elena's pharmaceutical company was his latest target. He'd been collecting information for months—taking photos of documents on her kitchen table, copying her work phone while she showered, monitoring her late-night calls.
What destroyed her wasn't the betrayal itself, but the method. The custom vitamin supplements he'd lovingly prepared each morning—his gesture of care, his devotion to her health—contained micro-transmitters. Every time she swallowed his thoughtfulness, she was also swallowing surveillance.
She flushed the vitamins. All of them.
Marcus came home to find her suitcase packed. His face crumbled when she held up the brush with that single blond hair—a hair that belonged to his previous target, a woman he'd supposedly 'consulted for' last year.
'How many?' she asked. 'How many vitamins? How many women?'
'This is the job,' he said, and that was the worst part. Not the lying, not the spying, but the casual way he diminished her entire existence to a line item in a portfolio.
Elena walked out without looking back. Later, she would wonder: had he ever loved her, or was she just another successful acquisition?
