The Wellness Influencer Fail

Maya stared at her iPhone screen, thumb hovering over the post button. Another day, another carefully curated wellness aesthetic. #ThatGirl vibes were exhausting.

"You're not actually gonna post that, are you?" Jordan asked from across the cafeteria table, raising an eyebrow.

"It's motivational," Maya insisted, though she felt like a fraud. The photo featured her morning vitamin gummies arranged artistically beside a papaya slice. What the photo didn't show: she'd bought the papaya on impulse because TikTok said it was trending, had no idea how to cut it, and ended up mangling it completely. The aesthetic vitamins? Her mom's chewy multis that tasted like fake strawberries.

Monday morning, she decided to level up her wellness game by going running before school. At 6 AM. Like actual fitness influencers did.

The run lasted approximately three minutes before she remembered she hated running. Her phone tracked it anyway: 0.2 miles, personal worst.

By Wednesday, the papaya had sat in her fridge long enough to start looking concerning. Jordan caught her trying to Instagram the "budding gut health journey" with yet another aesthetic vitamin shot.

"You know there's literally no science behind that glow wellness stuff, right?" Jordan said, munching on actual breakfast — a bagel. "Also, your papaya is literally fermenting."

Maya stared at the fruit, then at her phone's perfect feed, then at Jordan's unconcerned bagel face.

"Wait, you can tell when papaya goes bad?"

"The smell, Maya. The SMELL."

They ended up throwing the papaya in the woods behind the school ("for the squirrels," Jordan claimed, though Maya was pretty sure squirrels had standards). Maya posted one final story: a blurry photo of them sprinting away from the fruit crime scene, captioned "wellness is a journey lol."

The next morning, Maya slept until 7. No vitamins, no papaya, no running. Just her and her iPhone, doom-scrolling in peace. Weirdly, she never felt more authentic.
