The Wellness Disconnect

The vitamin D bottle sat on Maya's desk like a paperweight of medical anxiety. Three capsules daily, her doctor had said, ever since the bloodwork came back showing deficiencies that made perfect sense for someone who spent twelve hours a day under fluorescent lights staring at spreadsheets.

"You're not going to believe this," Chloe said, sliding into the chair across from hers. Chloe had been her friend since they were both wide-eyed associates, navigating the corporate labyrinth together. Now Chloe was a director, and Maya was still waiting. They still played padel every Tuesday evening—Chloe's way of pretending they were equals.

Maya's iPhone buzzed on her desk. A calendar notification: *Vitamin Check — 3:00 PM.* Chloe's calendar simultaneously pinged. They'd made the appointment together, solidarity in their shared panic about aging, about the ticking clock, about the way their bodies seemed to be betraying them before they'd even turned forty.

"I got it," Chloe said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "The partnership track. Starting next quarter."

The air in Maya's office suddenly felt thick, suffocating. She gripped the edge of her desk until her palm went white.

"That's... that's amazing, Chloe. Really." The words felt like stones in her throat.

Chloe's eyes searched Maya's face. "I know you were up for it too. They said you were close. But—"

"But what?"

Chloe hesitated, then reached across the desk, palm open like an offering. "They mentioned something about your... focus. Concerns about commitment."

Maya's phone buzzed again. Another calendar reminder, this time from HR: *Partnership Decision Notification — 4:00 PM.* An hour from now. The vitamin appointment at three.

"Focus?" Maya laughed, bitter and sharp. "I've been focused on nothing but this firm for fifteen years. While you were off playing padel and planning your wedding—"

"Maya—"

"No, really. While you were doing pilates and Instagramming your vitamin routines, I was here until midnight, building the foundation that you just got handed."

Chloe stood up, her face carefully neutral. "I should tell you. When they asked about you, about your dedication... I told them about the padel league. How you sometimes skipped client calls for games."

The silence stretched between them like a physical thing.

"We played together, Chloe. You were there too."

"I never missed a client call."

The vitamin bottle stood between them on Maya's desk. Three capsules daily. For health, for strength, for continuing to show up when everything inside you wanted to quit.

Maya picked up the bottle. "Well. I'll see you at three."

"Maya—"

"Go. Go celebrate your partnership."

When Chloe was gone, Maya opened her calendar app and deleted both reminders. Then she typed out a resignation letter, saved it as a draft, and went to the padel court alone. For the first time in years, the vitamin D bottle remained on her desk, untouched.
