The Wellness Betrayal
Maya arranged the papaya on her grandmother's ceramic plate with surgical precision. The fruit sat like a guilty secret beside a bed of wilted spinach—Elias's latest attempt at eating his way back to health. Three doctors, twelve specialists, and still no answers. Just atrophy in his right hand, fatigue that kept him bedbound, and the creeping dread that whatever was stealing him away had a name they hadn't learned yet.
"You're going again tonight," he said, not asking. His voice thinned by the week.
"It's just a meeting. With potential investors."
"At midnight?"
Maya's phone vibrated—her handler. The corporate spy ring she'd infiltrated six months ago was finally making its move on NutriCorp's proprietary vitamin formula. She'd be inside their servers by morning, a ghost in the machine, walking away with trade secrets worth millions. The irony tasted bitter: stealing health supplements while Elias hollowed out from the inside.
"I have to go."
"You're becoming a zombie," he said softly. "I see it. Your eyes are dead."
The words knocked the wind from her. She'd been so focused on the mission, on the money that could maybe buy them a future, that she hadn't noticed the present crumbling.
The heist unfolded with bloodless efficiency. By dawn, she'd transferred the formula to encrypted servers. Her payment cleared before the sun rose—enough for years of treatments, if they ever found one.
She returned to papaya turned to mush, spinach browned at the edges. Elias still slept, his breathing shallow and irregular. In the kitchen, she flushed a single vitamin pill down the toilet and watched it dissolve. All the stolen formulas in the world couldn't fix what was breaking between them.
Some betrayals don't leave fingerprints. They just leave you rich, successful, and completely alone.
