The Weight of Water

The ball hit the padel court with a satisfying thud. Sarah wiped sweat from her brow, her competitive streak flaring. 'You're playing like you've got something to prove, Marcus.'

Marcus laughed, but it didn't reach his eyes. 'Maybe I do.' His iphone vibrated against the bench—again.

They were swimming in debt, both of them. The corporate pyramid scheme had seemed brilliant eighteen months ago. Invest fifty thousand, recruit three people, watch it multiply. Instead, they'd watched it evaporate.

'Recruitment meeting is tonight,' Sarah said, serving the ball hard.

Marcus's phone lit up. A message from Elena: *It's collapsing. Get out now.*

He missed the return.

'You okay?' Sarah asked, genuine concern breaking through her game face.

'Yeah.' He picked up his iphone, hands trembling. 'Just thinking about how we got here.'

Sarah lowered her racket. 'The pyramid wasn't supposed to be this... fragile.'

'That's what pyramids do.' Marcus scrolled through the messages, panic rising in his chest like water filling his lungs. 'They collapse.'

'I'm meeting with legal tomorrow,' Sarah admitted quietly. 'The whole thing was structured wrong from the start.'

Marcus stared at her. 'You knew?'

'Suspected.' She sat on the bench. 'Why do you think I kept inviting you to play padel? I needed you to not hate me when this all came down.'

The swimming pool next door echoed with summer laughter, children and families enjoying their Saturday. Here, two adults sat in the shade of their bad decisions, watching the weight of consequence settle between them.

'Your silence is terrifying,' Sarah said softly.

Marcus gripped his phone tighter. 'I'm just wondering if fifty thousand dollars was worth learning who you really are.'

'That's low.'

'It's honest.' He stood up, grabbing his towel. 'Recruitment meeting tonight? Are you serious?'

'Some of us still believe we can swim,' she said, but her voice broke.

Marcus walked away, iphone buzzing with messages from people he'd recruited. Friends. Family. The pyramid had been built on trust, and now that trust would crush them all.

He didn't look back at Sarah, already drowning in the messages, each one a person he'd have to face tomorrow.
