The Weight of Unspoken Things

Elena pressed her palms against the conference table, the polished wood cool beneath her sweating hands. Across from her, Marcus — the bull in every china shop she'd ever managed — leaned forward, his presence consuming the room's oxygen.

"The market doesn't care about your sentimental bullshit," he said, his voice lacking any real malice, which somehow made it worse.

She'd had to bear his pragmatic cruelty for three years, watching him dismantle projects she'd nurtured from conception to fragile infancy. But this was different. This wasn't a budget cut or a rebranding exercise. This was her department — her people.

"That's my team you're talking about."

"Numbers, Elena. They're numbers on a spreadsheet." His cat-like smile suggested he enjoyed watching her cling to principles he'd abandoned years ago.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, Chicago sprawled like a bruised thing in the autumn rain. She remembered the cat she'd adopted after David left — how it had stared at her with those ancient, judging eyes, as if accusing her of letting something good slip through her fingers. Like the sphinx riddle she'd never solved: what dies when you feed it but lives when you starve it? The answer had been "nothing," or maybe it was "hope," she couldn't remember anymore.

Marcus's phone buzzed. He glanced at it and sighed. "I have to take this. Think about what I said."

When the door clicked shut, Elena allowed herself to breathe. The truth was, she was tired. Tired of fighting battles that nobody noticed, tired of bearing the weight of other people's livelihoods, tired of pretending that dignity paid the mortgage.

She looked at her reflection in the glass — forty-seven years old and still trying to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. Behind her, Marcus's phone buzzed again, insistent as unanswered questions.

Elena stood up, gathered her things, and walked out without writing anything on the whiteboard. Some battles weren't meant to be won. Some things were meant to be left unsaid. The sphinx had never given up its secrets, and neither would she.
