The Weight of Unanswered Riddles

Elena stood waist-deep in the lake, the cold water shocking her into clarity. Swimming had always been her escape — the one place where the world couldn't reach her. But even here, the iPhone on the shore glowed with incoming messages, its persistent notifications piercing the twilight like judgment.

She thought about Marcus, about how he'd become someone she no longer recognized. A corporate spy who sold secrets for a living, but it was the personal betrayals that hollowed her out. The tracking software he'd installed on her phone. The late nights he claimed were business. The way he looked at her now — not with love, but with calculation.

The burden of it was crushing. To bear the weight of his deception while pretending nothing had changed required a performance she wasn't sure she could sustain. Each lie between them had built another layer in the wall between their marriage, until Elena could no longer see the man she'd married twelve years ago.

"What are you hiding?" she'd asked him last night.

Marcus had smiled — that sphinx-like expression she'd grown to hate. "Some questions don't have answers, El."

He'd always been drawn to puzzles, to problems that could be solved with enough patience and intelligence. But their marriage had become a riddle he refused to engage with, a mystery he pretended didn't exist.

She waded deeper, the water now at her chest. Somewhere in the woods behind their cabin, a bear stirred — she could hear the heavy rustling, the guttural huff of a creature marking its territory. The wilderness didn't pretend. It didn't play games.

Her phone vibrated again on the shore. Maybe it was Marcus. Maybe it was the job she hadn't told him about — the corporate espionage firm that had finally offered her a way out, a position that required she do to others what had been done to her. Become what she hated to escape what she hated.

The irony wasn't lost on her. She was swimming in the same waters that had drowned him.

Elena touched the engagement ring on her finger, then slipped it off. The metal caught the last light of day as she let it fall into the dark water.

Some sphinxes don't have answers. Some riddles solve themselves when you stop trying to solve them and start walking away.
