The Weight of Pyramids

Marcus stood at the padel court's edge, watching Elena stretch. Three years since they'd spoken, and here she was, suggesting a friendly match as if nothing had happened. The desert heat shimmered around them, distorting the horizon where the Luxor's black pyramid pierced the sky like an inverted wound.

"You look tired," Elena said, bouncing the ball. Her voice still carried that same infuriating warmth.

Marcus gripped his racket until his knuckles burned. "Bear market will do that."

She laughed—a sound that used to comfort him. "Still bitter about the investment scheme? Marcus, everyone lost money. It wasn't personal."

"You recruited me." He stepped onto the court, the synthetic surface crunching beneath his shoes. "You showed me those charts, those projections. You said 'friend.'"

"I believed in it too." Elena's serve hit the back wall with violent precision. "We were both victims."

The ball ricocheted, and Marcus returned it clumsily. Sweat already dripped down his spine. "You were three tiers up. You cashed out before the collapse. I saw the liquidation records."

Silence stretched between points, thick and suffocating like Vegas air conditioning. They played without speaking for minutes—the sharp crack of ball against wall, the scuff of expensive shoes, their labored breathing filling the void where trust used to live.

"I needed the money," Elena said finally, her serve going into the net. "David's medical bills were piling up. The scheme—it was easy money. I thought I'd help you too."

"Help me?" Marcus smashed the ball past her. "I lost my retirement. My wife left. And you're still here, still winning."

"I'm not winning." Elena's voice cracked. "I haven't slept in six months. Every time I close my eyes, I see the people I recruited. The faces. Yours."

Marcus stopped mid-serve. The pyramid on the horizon seemed to pulse. "Then why ask me to play?"

"Because I owed you this." Elena set down her racket. "The truth. I owed you the goddamn truth."

Outside, a bear wandered the Strip—some circus escapee making headlines on casino screens. Inside, Marcus watched his former friend begin to weep, and realized that some pyramids, once they collapse, leave nothing worth excavating.
