The Water That Remembers

Arthur sat on the weathered bench by Miller's Pond, his cane resting against his knee. Beside him, seven-year-old Lily dangled her feet above the water, watching ripples spread from her toes.

"Grandpa, were you ever afraid of anything?" she asked, her voice small against the afternoon stillness.

Arthur smiled, the kind that crinkled eyes that had seen eighty-four years. "Oh, honey, there was a time when I was terrified of old Miller's bull."

"A bull? Like a cow-bull?"

"A beast the size of a tractor," Arthur nodded, "with horns that could hook the moon right out of the sky. My best friend Benjamin and I, we were twelve and foolish. We'd sneak through the tall grass just to spy on that creature grazing in the pasture. We called ourselves spies, but really we were just boys with more curiosity than sense."

He paused, watching a dragonfly skim the water's surface.

"One day Benjamin got too close. That bull lifted his head, looked right at us, and took off running. We ran too, hearts hammering like trapped birds. I don't think I've ever run so fast, before or since. We scrambled through fences, tripped over roots, laughing even as we thought for sure we were done for."

"Did you get caught?"

"We fell right into this pond," Arthur chuckled. "Soaked to the bone, shivering, but safe. That bull huffed at the fence line, then turned back to grazing like we were hardly worth the trouble. Benjamin and I lay in the mud, catching our breath, and decided that day was worth remembering."

He touched Lily's shoulder gently.

"Benjamin passed on five years ago, you know. But every time I come here, sit by this water, I can almost hear us running through those fields. The water remembers, Lily. It holds all our stories, even the ones we think we've forgotten."

Lily nodded solemn, understanding more than he expected.

"Grandpa? Can we be spies too?"

Arthur laughed, warm and deep. "I suppose we can. But let's spy on ducks instead of bulls. My running days are behind me."
