The Water Sphinx's Secret
Lila lived in a house where the backyard touched the edge of the world. Beyond the old wooden fence, there was nothing but shimmering blue water as far as any eye could see. Her dad called it the ocean, but Lila knew better. It was the Kingdom of Wet Things.
One hot afternoon, while eating a sweet orange papaya under the palm tree, Lila heard something splash. Not a fish splash. Not a wave splash. Something... giggly.
She crept to the water's edge and gasped. Rising from the sea was a creature made entirely of flowing water, yet it held its shape like something solid. It had the body of a lion, the wings of a dragon, and the wise face of an ancient being. A sphinx! But instead of stone or sand, this sphinx was made of sparkling ocean water.
"I am Splash," the Water Sphinx said, and its voice sounded like bubbles rising to the surface. "I have waited one thousand years for someone to find me."
"I'm Lila," she whispered, setting down her papaya. "Are you real?"
"As real as friendship," Splash answered wisely. "Do you like games?"
Lila nodded. She ran to the shed and grabbed her old padel racket. "We can play!"
And so they did. Splash would shape itself into a ball of water, and Lila would hit it gently with her padel. The water-ball would splash and reform, laughing as it flew. They played until the sun painted the sky pink and gold.
"Why were you waiting?" Lila asked, sitting beside her new friend.
Splash's water-face grew serious. "Because magic needs someone to believe in it. And kindness needs someone to share it with. You have both, Lila."
Lila's heart glowed warmer than the setting sun. She offered Splash the last piece of her papaya. The sphinx accepted it with a watery smile.
"Every day," Splash promised, "I will return when the tide comes in. And we will be friends forever."
That night, Lila fell asleep knowing the best secret of all: the ocean was full of magic, but the real treasure was finding a friend in the most unexpected place.
