The Water Courts

Maya stood at the edge of the padel court, her heart hammering like she'd been running a marathon instead of just standing there. Coach Martinez was demonstrating serves, his voice cutting through the humid afternoon air, but Maya's eyes kept drifting to the chain-link fence where a scrappy orange cat sat watching them, tail flicking.

"You gonna play or just stare at the fence?" Chloe called out, flipping her perfect ponytail. The rest of the varsity clique snickered. Maya's face burned—she'd only joined the padel team because her mom thought it would be "good for making friends" after they moved to this fancy suburban school where everyone seemed to know each other since kindergarten.

That evening, Maya found herself back at the courts, practicing alone under the fading light. The orange cat appeared again, rubbing against her legs like she belonged there. A sound from the woods made them both freeze—a red fox emerged from the shadows, eyes glowing. The cat hissed but stood her ground, and something about that tiny, fierce creature made Maya feel braver somehow.

"Not running this time," Maya whispered to herself, gripping her racquet tighter.

The next day, she made her first proper serve, sending the ball skimming perfectly over the net. Chloe actually nodded. "Not bad, new girl."

After practice, Coach Martinez found her by the water fountain. "You've got grit, Maya. Sometimes that matters more than natural talent."

Maybe she didn't need to fit into their perfect mold. The fox, the cat, even this weird paddle sport—they were all just trying to survive in their own way, finding their footing on uncertain ground.

That night, she left a saucer of water near the fence for her orange spectator. The cat appeared immediately, and beyond her, the fox watched from the tree line, wild and unbothered. Maya smiled, finally feeling like she might actually belong here, on her own terms.
