The Water Bull's Gift
Lily had the curliest hair in her village. Every morning, she'd try to comb it, but her brown springs would bounce right back. Her grandmother called it 'magic hair'—hair that remembered things. Lily wasn't sure what that meant, but she loved her hair anyway.
One hot afternoon, Lily followed a secret path she'd discovered behind the old willow tree. The path wound through tall grass until she heard something amazing—the sound of rushing water where no stream should be.
Pushing through ferns, Lily gasped. A crystal pool shimmered before her, fed by an underground spring. But what made her breath catch was what stood in the water—a magnificent bull made entirely of flowing water. His liquid form rippled like a river frozen in time, and his eyes sparkled like captured sunlight.
'You came,' the water bull spoke, his voice like gentle waves. 'I've been waiting for someone with magic hair.'
Lily stepped forward. 'My hair is just curly.'
The bull laughed, creating little splashes. 'Touch the water with your hair, and you'll understand.'
Curious, Lily knelt and dipped her curls into the cool pool. Suddenly, she heard voices—the laughter of children who'd played there centuries ago, the whispers of trees growing their first leaves, stories the water had kept safe.
'Your hair is a keeper of memories,' the bull explained. 'And I am the keeper of water. Together, we can share these stories with children who have no one to tell them tales.'
Every day that summer, Lily returned. She learned that her grandmother was right—her hair did remember things. And the water bull taught her that the best magic is the kind you share with others.
When autumn came, the bull grew smaller as the spring slowed. 'Thank you, Lily,' he said. 'You've helped me pass on what matters most.'
Lily waved goodbye, her damp curls bouncing with memories. She couldn't wait to share all the wonderful stories with children who needed them most—especially those who had no one to tell them bedtime tales.
That night, Lily finally understood. Her special hair wasn't just about curls at all. It was about carrying magic forward, one story at a time.
