The Vitamin You Swallow Whole

The papaya sat on her desk like an accusation. Forty-two years old and still trying to convince herself that if she just ate enough tropical fruit, she'd somehow become the woman who took vitamins without forgetting, who juggled a career and a love life without dropping everything.

At the baseball stadium, her father's voice echoed in memory: "Keep your eye on the ball." He'd taught her that life, like baseball, was about patience. About waiting for the right pitch. But she'd been waiting so long she'd forgotten what she was waiting for.

Her boss, Marcus—that bull of a man who steamrolled through meetings like he owned the room—had called her "intimidating" yesterday. As if ambition in a woman was something to be apologized for. She'd swallowed her response along with her morning vitamin, that little capsule of hope promising energy she couldn't feel.

The papaya ripened on her desk day after day, its skin turning from green to yellow like some kind of biological timer. Like her. Like all of them, really.

She bought tickets to the baseball game thinking it would make her feel connected to something. To her father, to the city, to whatever version of herself she'd been before the corporate grind sanded down her edges. But watching from the bleachers, surrounded by families and couples, she felt hollowed out.

The batter struck out. The crowd groaned. And somewhere in that sound, she heard herself.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus: "We need to discuss your approach."

She stared at the papaya, now soft and fragrant, and cut it open. Inside, black seeds like tiny eyes stared back. She ate it standing up in her kitchen at midnight, juice running down her chin, and for the first time in years, she didn't care about the mess.

Some things you can't control. The bull-headed men, the way a baseball curves when you least expect it, the dreams that dissolve before you can name them. But you can choose what you swallow.

She emailed Marcus her resignation at 2 AM. No vitamin required.
