The Vitamin Water Sphinx

Max pulled his beanie down lower, trying to disappear into the cafeteria wall. Freshman year was hitting different than he expected—like, he thought high school would be this epic coming-of-age movie montage, but instead it was just awkward lunch periods and feeling perpetually behind on everything.

"Hey, Max!" Maya's voice cut through his thoughts. She was sitting with her squad at their usual table, looking effortless in a way that seemed genetically impossible. "You running track this spring?"

"Maybe," Max managed, grabbing his vitamin water from his bag. His hand slipped, and the bottle skittered across the floor, stopping perfectly at Maya's feet. Of course.

As he bent to grab it, his hat fell off, revealing the disastrous haircut he'd given himself Sunday night because YouTube tutorials lied. The entire table went quiet for that one terrible second before Maya's golden retriever, who'd been wandering the cafeteria unleashed (because apparently that was allowed now?), bounded over and started enthusiastically licking his face.

"OH MY GOD, BEANS, NO!" Maya shrieked, practically tackling her dog. Meanwhile, Max's brain was short-circuiting. This was it. Peak embarrassment. He would never recover.

But then Maya started laughing. Not mean-girl laughing, but actually cracking up, and suddenly the whole table was giggling, and somehow Max was too. They spent the rest of lunch talking about everything—how Maya's dog was literally a chaos sphinx of destruction, how Max's haircut wasn't actually that bad, how track season was going to lowkey suck but they'd survive.

Walking home later, Max adjusted his hat, just a little higher this time. Maybe high school wasn't going to be exactly like the movies. But maybe that wasn't the worst thing. Sometimes the best moments weren't the ones you planned for anyway.
