The Vitamin Water Incident

Maya stared at herself in the bathroom mirror, adjusting her snapback hat backward like the cool kids did. First day of sophomore year, and she'd decided this was the year she'd stop being invisible. This was the year she'd finally be someone.

Her cat Mango rubbed against her ankle, probably hungry. "Sorry buddy," she whispered. "I gotta go."

The bus ride was its usual nightmare of noise and awkwardness. She sat alone, sipping her vitamin-enhanced water like it was some kind of magic potion that would transform her into someone confident. Someone who knew how to talk to people without overthinking every single word.

Then she saw him.

Alex Rivera, sitting three rows up, wearing that vintage jacket she'd been obsessing over from his Instagram. He was laughing with his friends, looking like he belonged in a movie, not on bus route 7 to Northwood High. Her stomach did that annoying flip-flop thing it always did when he was around.

"That's bull," someone said behind her. "No way she actually said that."

Maya tried to focus on her phone, but she could feel the gossip swirling. Something about Jenna and something that happened at Ethan's party over the weekend. She hadn't been invited, obviously. She was never invited to those things.

The bus lurched to a halt in front of school. Maya adjusted her hat, took a deep breath, and prepared herself for another year of being the quiet girl in the back of every classroom. The one who got good grades but never got invited to anything. The one who liked Alex Rivera from afar while everyone else got to actually talk to him.

"Nice hat," someone said.

Maya froze. It was Alex. Standing right there. Looking at her.

"Oh," she managed. "Thanks."

"You look different," he said. "Did you change something?"

And then it hit her—maybe this year wouldn't be like last year. Maybe things could change. Maybe the invisible girl could finally be seen.

"Yeah," Maya said, actually smiling now. "I think I did."
