The Vitamin Water Incident

vitaminspybaseballhatcable

Marcus adjusted the backwards **baseball** cap—stolen from his older brother's closet—for the fifth time. It kept sliding down over his ears, but he refused to fix it. Cool people didn't fix their hats. Cool people just existed.

He was currently crouching behind the massive **cable** box on the sidewalk, conducting what he called "strategic reconnaissance" but what anyone else would call "creepy **spy** behavior." Maya was supposed to walk by any minute. She'd transferred to their school last month and already had more friends than Marcus had collected in fourteen years of existence.

His phone buzzed. A text from Jordan: "u good bro? been there 20 mins"

Marcus typed back: "staking out the territory. strategic."

"r u doing that thing again where u think staring from 50 ft away counts as talking to her"

"shut up it's a process"

The truth was, Marcus had been taking these weird gummy **vitamin** supplements his mom bought because the bottle said "BOOST CONFIDENCE" and Marcus apparently had the self-esteem of a damp paper towel. They tasted like artificial grape and desperation.

Then he saw her. Maya walking down the street, laughing with Emma and Tyler. They looked effortless. Meanwhile, Marcus was literally hiding behind utility infrastructure like a socially anxious raccoon.

His **hat** slipped over his eyes at the worst possible moment. While trying to fix it, he knocked over a half-empty vitamin water bottle someone had left on the cable box. It spilled everywhere, bright yellow liquid splashing toward Maya's new white sneakers.

She stopped. Looked down. Looked up. Directly at him.

"Did you just..." She started laughing. Not mean laughing. The real kind.

Marcus stood up, his face burning. "I was trying to look cool and then I wasn't, and now there's vitamin water on your shoes, and I'm so sorry."

Maya grinned. "You know what? Same energy. I once tried to impress a guy by pretending I knew how to skateboard and literally fell into a dumpster."

"No way."

"Ask Emma, she witnessed my shame." She gestured to her friend. "So, you gonna keep hiding behind boxes, or you gonna actually say hi like a normal person?"

Marcus took a breath. Adjusted his stupid hat. "Hi. I'm Marcus. I'm awkward and I spilled vitamin water on you."

"Hi, awkward Marcus who spilled vitamin water on me. I'm Maya. And those shoes were washed anyway."

Sometimes, confidence didn't come from a bottle. Sometimes it came from embarrassing yourself so thoroughly you had nothing left to lose.
