The Vitamin Water Apocalypse

vitaminwaterzombie

I was operating on pure zombie mode, surviving on caffeine and desperation during finals week. My sleep schedule had been dead for days, and I was basically a walking corpse navigating the hostile halls of Northwood High.

At lunch, Jordan noticed my vacant stare and slid a mysterious blue bottle across the cafeteria table. "Take this. You look like you're about to pass out."

"What is it?" I mumbled, barely able to form coherent sentences.

"Vitamin water. My mom's obsessed with wellness stuff now. It's supposed to give you energy or whatever." Jordan's casual tone betrayed a hint of something—concern? friendship? I'd been crushing on them since September, but they were orbiting in a completely different social stratosphere.

The first gulp tasted like artificial blue raspberry and false hope. I was desperate enough to believe anything might help.

"So, Jenna's having a pool party Saturday after finals," Jordan said, suddenly interested in their own phone. "You should come. Since when do you care about my social life? I blurted, then immediately regretted it. Defensiveness was my default setting.

Jordan actually laughed. "Since you started showing up to AP Chem looking like you escaped from a graveyard every morning. It's impressive, honestly."

I was too stunned to respond. Was this flirting? Or pity? The lines blurred when your brain was running on three hours of sleep and whatever mysterious compounds were in this vitamin-enhanced water.

Saturday arrived, and there I was, standing at Jenna's backyard gate, clutching a fresh bottle of vitamin water like it was a lifeline. The sound of splashing water and laughter drifted through the fence. My heart hammered like I was about to face a horde of the actual undead.

Jordan spotted me immediately. "You came!"

"Barely," I admitted. "I might be legally asleep right now."

"That's fine. Being a zombie is honestly a vibe this semester." Jordan's grin was genuine. "Plus, you're here. That's what matters."

I stepped through the gate, leaving my zombie state at the door. Maybe that's all anyone really wanted—someone to show up, even when they felt like the walking dead. The vitamin water helped, but having someone notice you're struggling? That was the real antidote.
