The Vitamin Thief

Elena sat across from Marcus at their breakfast nook, watching him slice into a ripe papaya with surgical precision. The morning light caught the silver at his temples, making him look distinguished rather than the forty-three years he'd confessed to when they'd met three years ago.

"You're not taking your vitamin D," she noted, gesturing to the untouched supplement bottle on the counter.

Marcus smiled—that charming, practiced smile that had won her over when she was still senior analyst at Harmonix Pharmaceuticals. "Forgot. Busy week ahead."

Busy week indeed. Elena had noticed the encrypted messages on his phone at 3 AM. The way he'd started asking about her company's upcoming syn-B formulation—the revolutionary vitamin complex that would dominate the wellness market. The fox in the henhouse, and she'd left the gate wide open.

Her phone buzzed. A text from her boss: *Corporate spy investigation complete. The leak matches your boyfriend's profile. Need to confirm.*

Bear this burden, she thought. Not for the first time, she questioned whether the promotion to head of security had been worth it. The existential weight of discovering your lover was a corporate spy—the ultimate modern romance tragedy.

"Marcus," she said, her voice steady despite the thunder in her chest. "When did your firm start working with Harmonix's competitors?"

His knife froze. The papaya's juices ran across the cutting board like betrayal itself—slow, inevitable, staining everything.

"Elena..."

"Just answer the question."

"Eight months ago," he whispered. "It was supposed to be simple research. Then I met you, and..." He set down the knife. "I was going to tell you. After the product launch."

"After you stole the formula."

"After I ensured you'd be taken care of, regardless of what happened to Harmonix."

She laughed—dark humor for a dark situation. "And the vitamin D? Was that real? Or just another way to track my health patterns?"

"That was real, Elena. I love you."

The spy who loved her. What a cliché.

She stood up, walked to the window, watched the city wake up below. "You know what's ironic? The syn-B formula? It was defective. We discovered last week that long-term use causes liver damage. We're pulling it from production tomorrow."

Marcus's face went pale. "You're... you're not launching it?"

"No. But your bosses don't know that yet. Do they?"

She turned back to him. "You can tell them I'm the one who leaked it. That I sabotaged the project. They'll never trust another source from Harmonix again."

"Why would you do that?"

"Because," she said, "even foxes deserve second chances. And I'm not ready to stop loving you yet."

The papaya sat between them, forgotten, its sweet scent filling the silence with false promises of tropical paradise.
