The Vitamin Thief

foxvitaminspycat

Elara first noticed the discrepancy on a Tuesday morning. The bottle of vitamin D supplements she'd bought just three days ago was already half-empty. Marcus never took vitamins — he mocked them as placebos for the anxious. Yet there they were, disappearing into the thin morning air of their marriage.

She became a spy in her own home. That's what betrayal does to you — it turns domesticity into a surveillance operation. She began tracking his movements: the late-night phone calls to unknown numbers, the sudden interest in encryption software, the gym bag that seemed too light for someone who never worked out. The vitamins were just the beginning.

A fox had taken to visiting their garden at dusk. Elara watched it from the kitchen window, admiring its rust-colored coat and the way it moved with deliberate, silent purpose. Beautiful and dangerous, just like the lies unraveling her life. The fox would steal eggs from the neighbor's chicken coop, vanishing before anyone could prove it existed.

"You're seeing ghosts," Marcus said when she confronted him about the vitamins, his eyes flickering with something she couldn't name. "Maybe I'm trying to be healthier. Isn't that what you've always wanted?"

What Elara wanted was the truth. She hired a private investigator, a woman named Samira who smelled of clove cigarettes and desperation. Two weeks later, Samira handed her a thick envelope. Inside were photos of Marcus meeting with a competitor from his pharmaceutical company, passing documents in parked cars, looking over his shoulder with the practiced paranoia of someone who knew they were being watched.

The vitamins weren't vitamins at all — they were industrial-strength cognitive enhancers, illegal in the EU. Marcus wasn't taking them. He was selling them, part of a larger operation trafficking unregulated nootropics to executives desperate for any edge in the corporate ladder climb.

The neighbor's cat, a battle-scarred tom named Buster, watched from the fence as Elara packed her bags. Marcus's pleading had devolved into threats, his true nature finally surfacing through the cracks in his carefully constructed facade. Like the fox, he'd been living off stolen goods and someone else's negligence, hiding in plain sight.

Elara left him everything but her name and the cat, who followed her to the car as if he'd been waiting for this moment all along. Sometimes the wrong thing happens, and the unexpected creature becomes the one who saves you.
