The Vitamin That Changed Everything

Maya pulled the snapback down over her eyes, grateful for the shadow it cast on her face. The cafeteria noise hit her like a physical wave—laughter, shouting, the screech of metal chairs. She gripped her water bottle with one hand and reached into her pocket with the other, fingers closing around the small orange bottle.

"Hey, Earth to Maya."

She jumped. Jordan slid onto the bench across from her, tray clattering. Jordan, with their perfectly messy hair and effortless laugh. The person Maya had been trying to work up the courage to actually talk to for months.

"Sorry," Maya mumbled, her face heating up. "Just... tired."

"You good? You look kinda stressed." Jordan's eyes dropped to Maya's hand, still clenched around the orange bottle in her pocket. "What's that?"

Maya's brain went into full panic mode. Should she lie? Say it was nothing? But Jordan was already leaning in, genuinely curious. And honestly, Maya was tired of pretending.

"It's... kinda embarrassing." Maya pulled out the bottle. "Vitamin D supplements. My doctor says I'm deficient because I never go outside because I'm always inside overthinking everything and now I'm telling you way too much information."

The words tumbled out in a rush. Maya waited for Jordan to laugh, to make some awkward excuse and leave.

Instead, Jordan's eyes went wide. "Wait, seriously? I take those too!"

"What?"

"Yeah!" Jordan dug through their backpack and produced an identical orange bottle. "I'm always inside gaming or whatever, and my mom was all 'you're gonna get rickets' so now I'm basically a vitamin D dealer for my friends."

Maya stared, then let out a surprised laugh. "You're a vitamin dealer?"

"The underground market of awkward teenagers who need more sun," Jordan grinned, their smile reaching their eyes. "Hey, you doing anything this weekend? My friends and I are gonna hang out at the park, get some actual vitamin D the natural way. You should come."

Maya felt something warm bloom in her chest. She adjusted her hat, pushed it back slightly. "I'd... I'd like that."

"Cool." Jordan's grin widened. "Oh, and Maya?"

"Yeah?"

"Nice hat."

Maya smiled, a real one that reached her eyes. Sometimes the most embarrassing things became the best conversations. And sometimes, all it took was a little vitamin D—and a little courage—to find exactly where you belonged.
