The Vitamin Scheme

Maya stared at the corporate pyramid chart on her office wall, each level representing another layer of management she'd have to claw through to reach the director's seat. The vitamin company she'd given five years to had stopped feeling like a career months ago, but the health insurance kept her tethered.

Her phone buzzed—a text from her mother again, urging her to try those new supplements that promised eternal youth. Maya pushed back from her desk and decided to go for a run.

The autumn air bit at her cheeks as she pounded through the park, her breath creating ghostly clouds in the twilight. That's when she saw it—a fox, sleek and russet, frozen near a cluster of trees. For a moment, they locked eyes. Then the animal bolted, not from fear but something else—pure, unbridled purpose.

Maya stopped running. The fox knew something she'd forgotten: how to move like you meant it, like survival and desire were the same thing.

She returned to her apartment to find her cat, Binx, curled on the windowsill where he always waited. The cat stretched, yawned, and regarded her with那份那份perfect indifference that only animals could master. Binx had never worried about corporate pyramids or vitamin supplements or the crushing weight of expectations.

"What do you know?" Maya whispered, scratching behind his ears.

The cat purred, a sound like a tiny engine of contentment. And in that moment, Maya understood: tomorrow, she would finally draft that resignation letter. She would stop climbing pyramids built on someone else's blueprint. She would run, not away from something, but toward whatever came next.
