The Vitamin Pyramid Scheme

Marcus stood in the school cafeteria, staring at the goldfish cracker floating in his spinach smoothie. His mom had blended it that morning — part of her new "wellness journey" that had taken over their entire house since she joined VitalLife, that multilevel marketing company everyone was talking about.

"You need your vitamins, mijo," she'd said, handing him the murky green concoction. "This is your future."

His future currently involved explaining to his friends why his house smelled like kale and desperation, and why his mom had started calling him a "wellness warrior" in front of his crush, Sofia.

"Your mom posted another TikTok," Jasmine said, sliding into the seat across from him. "She was doing that weird breathing exercise in front of a pyramid of vitamin bottles. It's... honestly iconic?"

Marcus buried his face in his hands. "She's trying to recruit people at the grocery store now. Yesterday I caught her explaining the 'compensation structure' to the cashier while they were scanning her spinach."

"Wait," Sofia appeared behind him, holding a tray. "Your mom is THAT Vitamin Lady? The one who did the presentation at my aunt's church?"

Marcus died inside. "Please tell me she didn't try to sell your aunt those energy supplements."

"Actually," Sofia sat down next to him, "your mom gave me this free sample." She pulled out a small packet. "She said something about me being a 'rising star' and 'future entrepreneur.'"

The goldfish cracker in Marcus's smoothie dissolved.

"She thinks you're gonna join her downline," Jasmine said, delighted. "This is hilarious."

But Sofia was smiling, and not in a mean way. "Your mom's kind of intense, but she gave me this whole speech about believing in yourself and seizing opportunities. It was actually... kind of inspiring?"

Marcus looked at her. Really looked at her. "You think?"

"Yeah," Sofia said. "Plus, she told me you're really good at math, and that if anyone could figure out whether the compounding structure actually works, it's you."

The goldfish cracker was gone, but Marcus felt something else rising in his chest. Something that had nothing to do with vitamins or pyramid schemes.

"I could, uh, show you the math sometime," he managed. "If you want."

Sofia's smile widened. "I'd like that."

Jasmine fake-gagged. "This is grosser than spinach smoothies."

Marcus didn't care. Some things, he decided, were worth the embarrassment.
