The Vitamin Pyramid Scheme

spinachvitaminfriendspypyramid

My best friend since third grade stood in my bedroom holding a bag of organic spinach like it was contraband. "Dude, you have to try this smoothie. It changed my life."

I eyed Jordan skeptically. The same Jordan who'd convinced me that TikTok fame was one viral video away. The same Jordan who'd talked me into dyeing my hair purple last month (still regretting that one).

"What's actually in it?" I asked, already bracing myself.

Jordan's face lit up like he'd been waiting for this exact question. "Spinach, obviously, but the secret ingredient is this vitamin supplement my cousin's selling. It's literally going to fix everything – your skin, your energy, your whole vibe."

He pulled out this fancy-looking bottle with a pyramid on the label. "And here's the crazy part: if you start selling it too, we can make bank together. It's called the Wellness Pyramid."

I froze. A pyramid scheme. In my bedroom. On a Tuesday.

"Jordan," I said slowly, "that's literally a pyramid scheme."

"No, it's not! It's multi-level marketing! My cousin's already making, like, three grand a month. He bought a Tesla, Marcus. A TESLA."

I stared at him, suddenly feeling like I was the main character in one of those cringe TikToks where someone's friend tries to sell them essential oils. But Jordan wasn't a random internet stranger – he was my person. We'd been through everything together: first crushes, failed exams, that time we accidentally set off the school fire alarm (we still don't talk about that).

But this? This felt different.

"Let me think about it," I said, taking the spinach smoothie he offered.

That night, I did something I'd never done before: I became a spy in my own friendship. I scrolled through Jordan's Instagram, watched his stories, looking for clues. Had he changed? Was this new Jordan, or had this scheme-obsessed version been lurking underneath all along?

By Friday, I couldn't take it anymore. The truth poured out at lunch.

"Jordan, you're literally trying to recruit me into a pyramid scheme. What happened to us just being friends without trying to make money off each other?"

The cafeteria went silent. Jordan's face crumbled.

"I just... I thought this could be our thing. You know, something we could build together. Like, actually build something real instead of just... existing."

His voice cracked. "My parents are fighting about money again. I thought if I could help, maybe..."

Oh.

The pyramid scheme wasn't about greed. It was about desperation. About feeling like you had to grow up faster than you should.

"Next time you have an idea," I said, "let's just run it by each other first. No more surprise business ventures in my bedroom."

Jordan laughed. "Deal. But you're still finishing that smoothie."

I took a sip. It tasted like grass and sadness, but I drank it anyway. Because that's what friends do – they drink terrible spinach smoothies and call out pyramid schemes and somehow, somehow, figure out how to grow up together without growing apart.
