The Vitamin Pyramid Scheme

vitaminpyramidfoxbullspy

Maya's phone buzzed. Third notification from her mom's 'Wellness Warriors' group chat in ten minutes.

"Honey, can you believe Dr. K wasn't even a real doctor?" Mrs. Chen announced from the kitchen, arranging tiny bottles of neon-orange liquid on the counter. "But the VITALIX formula is legit. It's basically sunshine in a bottle."

Maya side-eyed the growing pyramid of supplements on the dining table. Her mom had gone down a YouTube rabbit hole three weeks ago and emerged with a 'business opportunity' that smelled like a classic pyramid scheme, but try telling that to someone suddenly convinced they'd found their calling.

"Mom, please tell me you didn't buy more inventory."

"It's an INVESTMENT, Maya. Your uncle Tony already signed up under me. Once I hit Diamond Level, we're talking residual income for LIFE."

Maya grabbed an apple and bolted. Anything was better than another lecture about the power of multilevel marketing.

At school, the social pyramid felt just as precarious. Maya had been navigating the minefield of sophomore year with zero strategies — until Leo, the new kid with fox-like sharp eyes and a perpetually messy whatever haircut, started sitting near her at lunch.

Today he slid into the seat across from her, chin lifted. "Rumor has it your mom's selling miracle vitamins now."

Maya nearly choked on her apple. "Who told you that?"

"I have my sources." Leo grinned, all teeth and mischief. "Also, your mom tried to recruit my sister yesterday."

Maya buried her face in her hands. This was it. Her social life was over. Her mom was literally recruiting people at school now.

"Hey." Leo's voice softened. "It's actually kind of hilarious? My parents fell for that essential oil scheme last year. Our house still smells like peppermint misery."

Maya peeked through her fingers. "Your whole life is a lie, Leo."

"Tell me something I don't know." He leaned in. "Want to spy on the wellness meeting your mom's hosting tonight? My sister's making me go. We can suffer together."

Her stomach did that thing — the fluttery, terrifying thing that happened whenever Leo got within three feet of her.

"You're terrible."

"I'm a gift from the universe, Maya Chen. Don't fight destiny."

That evening, Maya perched on her windowsill, watching the parking lot fill with minivans. Below, Leo's sister stood on the sidewalk, gesturing dramatically at something in the distance. Leo caught Maya's eye and winked, then held up his phone, pointing to it.

spy_MODE_ACTIVATED: his read message.

Maya typed back: you_are_the_worst.

He replied: your_mom_just_called_me_a_young_visionary.

She laughed so hard she nearly fell out the window.

Maybe this wasn't how she imagined her first almost-date happening. Maybe her mom was currently downstairs trying to sell her aunt a starter pack of immune support gummies. But when Leo looked up and grinned — really grinned, like she was the only person worth watching — Maya decided to roll with it.

Somehow, against all odds, this ridiculous pyramid scheme summer was turning into something good.

Sometimes the worst disasters came with the best plot twists.
