The Vitamin of Memory

Martha sat on the screened porch, the morning sun warming her arthritis-stiffened hands. Her granddaughter Lily, all of twelve and curious as a cat, watched from the wicker chair across from her.

"Grandma, why do you always eat that papaya every morning?" Lily asked, swinging her legs. "It looks so... strange."

Martha smiled, her fingers prying the golden flesh from the rind. "Your grandfather planted this tree, forty-seven years ago. We'd just bought this house, just starting out." She took a bite, closed her eyes. "Tastes like our wedding trip to Hawaii. But also like every summer Sunday by the pool, watching you children splash and grow."

The pool—that kidney-shaped blue oasis in the backyard—had witnessed three generations of cannonballs and first swims. Now its concrete was cracked, the filtration system silent. Martha's children had begged her to fill it in. "Too much maintenance, Mom. Someone could get hurt."

"But the memories," Martha had told them. "Where will the new memories splash?"

Lily nibbled the papaya Martha offered her, nose crinkling then softening. "It's... like sunshine."

"Exactly." Martha patted her granddaughter's hand. "You know what I've learned, after all these years? People think the important vitamins come in pills. They line up at the pharmacy, seeking zinc and calcium and D3."

She gestured toward the silent pool, its surface rippling in the wind. "But the real vitamins? The ones that keep you alive inside? They're not in bottles. They're in papaya that tastes like Hawaii in 1978. They're in the echo of children laughing from a pool you haven't filled in. They're in the way your grandfather's voice still wakes me every morning, saying 'Martha, my love, the papaya's ready.'"

Lily's eyes were wide, understanding dawning. "So you eat it to remember?"

"I eat it to be thankful," Martha said. "For every sweet thing that rooted itself in my life and keeps growing, season after season." She smiled. "Now, try another bite. It's got more vitamin than anything they sell at the store."
