The Vitamin of Courage
Lily loved summer more than anything. Every day, she grabbed her favorite baseball glove and ran to the park. But this summer felt different. The children in her town were moving strangely, walking slowly with blank faces, like the zombies from her storybooks.
At breakfast, her grandmother placed a shiny orange tablet beside her glass of water. "This is a special vitamin," Grandma whispered. "It will give you courage when you need it most."
Lily swallowed it with cold water, feeling a warm tingle spread through her chest. That afternoon, she saw the zombie children gathering at the baseball diamond. They weren't playing – they were just standing there, staring at the ground.
"What happened to you?" Lily called out.
A zombie boy turned slowly. "We forgot how to have fun," he said sadly. "The Gloom Cloud made us forget."
Lily's heart pounded. She remembered the vitamin of courage. Taking a deep breath, she shouted, "Then let's remember together!" She threw her baseball high into the air. "Who wants to play?"
The zombie children watched the ball sail through the sky. Something sparkled in their eyes. One by one, they reached out their hands. The baseball became magical, bouncing from glove to glove, faster and faster.
"Run!" Lily laughed, and the children began to run – really run!
"Throw!" she cheered, and they threw with all their might.
Soon, the whole diamond was alive with laughter. The Gloom Cloud floated away, defeated by something more powerful than magic – friendship and fun.
That night, Lily realized the vitamin hadn't given her magic powers at all. The courage had been inside her all along. Sometimes, all it takes to help others is the bravery to start something wonderful.
She fell asleep with her baseball glove beside her, ready for tomorrow's adventure, knowing that even the gloomiest days can turn sunny with a little courage and a lot of heart.
