The Vitamin Legacy

runningvitaminpadel

Martha stood at the edge of the padel court, her cane steady against the chain-link fence. At seventy-eight, she had exchanged running marathons for running memories, but watching her granddaughter Sophie chase that ball brought it all back—the thunder of heartbeats, the rush of air, the feeling that her body could still surprise her.

'Grandma! Watch this!' Sophie called, paddle raised high, executing a perfect backhand that Martha might have pulled off in her thirties. The ball sailed true, and Martha's heart soared with it.

After the match, Sophie trotted over, flushed with victory, the way Martha used to be after a good run. They sat together on the bench, Sophie pulling two small bottles from her bag.

'I brought you this,' Sophie said, pressing a bottle of orange vitamin gummies into Martha's weathered hand. 'Mom says you always forget your vitamins.'

Martha's throat tightened. How many times had she reminded her own children? 'Every morning,' she'd preached, pressing vitamin tablets into their small palms. 'Your body needs fuel to run the race of life.' Now here was Sophie, third generation, returning the care.

'You know,' Martha said softly, opening the bottle, 'when I was your age, I thought vitamins were just pills. Now I know they're love in a bottle—someone caring enough to want you strong, to want you here, running alongside them for as long as possible.'

Sophie's eyes widened. 'That's why you always made Grandpa take his?'

'That's why.' Martha's voice grew tender. 'And why he took them, even when he complained. Because love isn't just the big moments. It's the vitamins. It's showing up at padel matches. It's remembering what keeps someone whole.'

Sophie pulled Martha into a hug that smelled of sweat and sunshine. 'I'm going to make sure you take these every day,' she whispered. 'Because I want you here forever.'

Martha patted her granddaughter's back, feeling the rhythm of Sophie's racing heart against her own slower, steadier beat. Running, vitamins, padel—three threads weaving together across generations, all saying the same thing: I love you enough to want you strong.
