The Vitamin Deficient

Maya found the spinach at the back of the refrigerator—a wilted, slimy reminder of the dinner they'd never made. Three weeks ago, Daniel had announced he was going vegan, buying fresh produce with the optimism of a new convert. Now the spinach lay blackened in its crisper drawer, much like the conversation between them.

He sat at the kitchen island, face illuminated by his iPhone screen, thumb scrolling through someone else's perfectly curated life. The blue light cast harsh shadows across his face—a digital midnightscape she no longer knew how to navigate.

"Did you see my message?" she asked, not for the first time.

"Mmhmm," he murmured, not looking up. "Work's been crazy."

The cable modem in the living room had been blinking ominously all morning, a dying beacon in their suburban desert. Their entire marriage seemed to depend on that fragile connection—the wifi signal that kept them tethered to work, to friends, to everything except each other.

She'd found the vitamin bottle on his nightstand yesterday—a premium blend promising enhanced focus, better sleep, increased libido. The seal was broken, pills untouched. Another purchase, another promise, another thing abandoned when the initial effort required proved too great.

"Daniel, we need to talk. About us."

"Can it wait? I'm on this deadline."

It was always the deadline. Always the cable that needed fixing. Always the vitamin regimen that needed restarting. Always something between them, something more immediate than the quiet catastrophe of their drifting apart.

Maya looked at the spinach again. At least it had the decency to rot visibly, to announce its decay. Their marriage had gone bad without a sound, without a smell—just a slow, imperceptible souring that left them both wondering what had happened to the freshness they once swore would never fade.

She dropped the spinach container into the trash. The plastic hit bottom with a hollow thud.

"I'm going to stay with Sarah for a while."

Daniel finally looked up, his iPhone face-down on the counter. "What?"

"The spinach." She pointed to the trash. "It's been dead for weeks, Daniel. We just kept pretending."
