The Vitamin Dealer
The palm tree outside my office window has seen better days. Its fronds droop like a forgotten umbrella, and I find myself staring at it more than I should. It's been six months since I took this job in Miami—six months of pretending to be a regional sales director for a supplement company while actually gathering evidence for the FTC.
I'm not really a spy. I'm just a guy who needed the money after my divorce drained everything. But sometimes, when you're desperate enough, you become whatever someone pays you to be.
My handler calls me "the dog" because I keep sniffing around until I find something. It's meant to be derogatory, but I've grown to like it. Dogs are loyal. Dogs protect. I'm protecting consumers from Marcus's bullshit vitamin claims.
Marcus is the CEO of NutriVital Solutions. He's also the man my ex-wife left me for. The irony isn't lost on me. I'm here to destroy him professionally while he's living in the house I paid for, sleeping with the woman I thought would love me forever.
Today, Marcus called me into his office to discuss the new "anti-aging" formula they're launching. He's going to market it as a breakthrough vitamin complex that reverses cellular damage. It's bull. It's all bull. The scientists I've secretly consulted say it's nothing but expensive filler.
"You look tired, Tom," Marcus said, leaning back in his leather chair. A bronze bull statue—his college mascot—sat on his desk, as if mocking me. "Maybe you need some of our new formula."
I almost laughed. Instead, I nodded and made notes about the marketing rollout. All the while, my phone was recording in my pocket. Every claim about clinical trials, every promise of results, every lie.
Tonight, I'll drive to the marina where Marcus keeps his boat. I'll hand over the evidence to my handler. And then I'll go home alone to my empty apartment, take a real vitamin, and try to sleep.
The palm outside my window is still dying, but at least it's not pretending to be something it's not. Maybe that's more than I can say for myself.
