The Vitamin Cable Incident

bullcablewatervitamin

Marcus stood at the edge of Miller's Pond, clutching his backpack like a lifeline. Behind him, the cable from the old rope swing dangled uselessly—snapped somewhere in the middle of Jason's daredevil stunt twenty minutes earlier.

"I'm not doing it," Marcus said, voice cracking.

"Don't be a wuss," Jason called from the bank, already swaggering around like he owned the place. His friends chuckled, that synchronized laugh that made Marcus feel like the smallest person on earth. "Unless you're scared of a little water."

The water glittered innocently below—deep, mysterious, and apparently calling Marcus's courage into question. His cheeks burned. This was it. The moment when either he became a legend or remained "that quiet kid who does homework at parties."

"Fine." Marcus dropped his bag. "But I'm doing it my way."

He fished in his pocket and pulled out the gummy vitamin his mom insisted he take every morning. "For immunity," she'd said. He'd been carrying it around for weeks, waiting for the right moment to actually chew it. What better time than before potentially drowning?

Jason raised an eyebrow. "You eating candy now? Seriously?"

"It's a vitamin," Marcus said defensively. "For energy."

He popped it in his mouth, grabbed the broken cable, and swung.

The moment was magical—suspended in air, the world dropping away, everything perfect until—

SPLASH.

Marcus emerged from the water sputtering and soaking, but grinning like an idiot. Everyone was cheering. Even Jason looked impressed.

"That was actually kinda sick," Jason admitted, extending a hand to pull him out.

Later, as they sat on the bank drying off, Marcus realized something: the vitamin hadn't given him magical courage. The swing hadn't transformed him into a hero. But standing at the edge, terrified and doing it anyway? That was its own kind of brave. And maybe that was enough.

"Next time," Jason said, "we're fixing that cable first. And bring more of those vitamins."

Marcus laughed. "Deal."
