The Vitamin Bottle Spy

Maya slid the orange prescription bottle across her desk while Chloe FaceTimed her. 'So my mom thinks these vitamin D supplements are gonna fix my entire personality,' she deadpanned.

Chloe laughed. 'Girl, you're fine. Your personality's already... iconic.' There was a pause that Maya couldn't read. 'Hey, send me that TikTok from lunch? The one Jake made of you spilling ranch all over your new white jeans?'

Maya hesitated. 'You weren't at lunch.' She'd sat alone that day after their fight.

'Oh, I was totally watching from my car. You know how I do.' Chloe's voice went tight at the edges. 'Best friend reconnaissance.'

That's when Maya's stomach dropped. For weeks, she'd felt like someone was always watching. Like every minor embarrassing moment became instantly known. The failed presentation. The cry in the bathroom. The time she'd tripped over nothing in the hallway and literally ate floor.

She opened Instagram. Blocked Chloe.

Within minutes: blocked back. No text. No explanation. Three years of friendship deleted like that.

Maya's fingers hovered over her phone. She'd been so desperate for a friend after moving to this school, she'd ignored all the signs. The way Chloe knew everything. The way people would whisper and then stop when Maya walked by. The way Chloe had special 'sources' who were just people watching Maya's embarrassing moments and reporting back.

Her mom knocked on her door. 'Everything okay with Chloe?'

'We're not friends anymore,' Maya said, and it hurt more than she expected. 'She was basically running a whole fan account about my life except the fans were bullies and I was the content.'

Her mom sat beside her. 'That's rough. You know what helps?' She handed Maya a smoothie. 'Actually good vitamin intake and boundaries.'

Maya laughed through tears. 'Thanks, Mom.'

The next day at school, Maya sat with new people at lunch. They didn't know about the ranch incident. They didn't know about the bathroom cry. They just knew her as Maya, the new girl who was actually pretty funny once you got past her awkwardly straight bangs.

And somewhere, Chloe was probably still watching. But Maya didn't care anymore. She was done being the entertainment. She was ready to be the protagonist.
