The Vitamin Aisle Revelation

Maya stared at her reflection, running fingers through her hair—currently sporting the world's most unfortunate layers. The stylist had promised "textured and modern." What she got was "hello, I'm a poodle from 2007."

Her iPhone buzzed on the bathroom counter. Instagram notification: @jordan.smith liked your post.

Her heart did that annoying fluttery thing. Jordan, the junior varsity soccer captain with hair that defied physics and a smile that made her forget basic English. She'd been subtly (okay, obsessively) cultivating her aesthetic for months—curated posts, strategically artsy photos, the whole deal.

Tonight was Emma's birthday party. The social event of the season. Everyone who mattered would be there, including Jordan.

Maya's mom popped her head into the bathroom. "Honey, did you take your vitamins?"

"Seriously? Now?" Maya gestured at her hair disaster. "I'm having a crisis here and you're asking about supplements?"

"They help with stress! And hair growth!" Her mom's eyes lit up. "Actually, I read that biotin does wonders for—"

"I'm not taking horse pills for my hair, Mom."

But as her mom retreated, Maya caught sight of her iPhone again. Another notification: Jordan had posted a story. She tapped it instinctively, even though she knew better. Jordan and some friends at the beach. All golden and perfect and effortless.

That familiar weight settled in her stomach—the comparison game, played and lost before she even realized she'd started playing.

She stared at herself in the mirror. The hair was still bad. TheiPhone screen reflected her own skeptical expression back at herself.

Her mom's voice drifted through the door: "You know, your aunt Sarah took those vitamins for three months and her hair grew like crazy. But mostly, she just felt better about everything."

Maya paused. Felt better about everything.

She grabbed the bottle of vitamins from the counter. Swallowed two with tap water.

Then she grabbed her iPhone, opened Instagram, and typed:

"Hair emergency level: disaster. Accepting suggestions or just come laugh at me. Emma's, 7 PM."

She hit post before she could overthink it.

By 7:15, her doorbell rang. It was Jordan. Holding a bottle of the same vitamins her mom had given her.

"My mom said these help with hair," Jordan said, grinning. "Also, I heard you're having a crisis. Figured I should bring reinforcements."

Maya laughed—really laughed, for the first time all day.

"You have no idea," she said. "But you're definitely the best vitamin delivery service I've ever had."

Jordan laughed too, and Maya thought maybe—just maybe—bad hair days weren't the end of the world. Especially when they led to moments like this.
