The Unsolved Riddle

The morning Elena left, I noticed the coaxial cable hanging loose from the wall where the television had been. She'd taken the TV but left the cable dangling—a black umbilical cord severed at the source. The apartment felt cavernous without her things, though she'd only taken what she'd brought into our marriage five years ago: her clothes, her books, the vintage sphinx statue she'd bought in Cairo, and the goldfish.

"It's not about the fish," she'd said the night before, her sphinx-like face unreadable. That expression had always fascinated me—the way her eyes could hold such complexity while revealing nothing. Like the mythical creature, she posed riddles I couldn't solve.

"Then take me instead of it," I'd countered, trying for humor that fell flat.

She'd looked at me then with something between pity and exhaustion. "You think I'm leaving because of what's missing. But I'm leaving because of what's here."

I'd spent our relationship gathering wrong answers. I assumed she wanted cable television when she actually wanted connection. I thought the goldfish was a placeholder for a pet we'd get someday, a dog or cat. She once told me the fish represented her: swimming in circles, forgotten in corners, beautiful only when light caught her scales. I'd laughed, not understanding she wasn't joking.

Now I stood in the living room, the cable modem's lights blinking in sequence. The goldfish bowl remained on its stand, a single orange-finned survivor swimming lazy laps. Elena hadn't taken him after all.

I dropped pellets into the bowl, watching the fish rise to break the surface. The sphinx had been right about some things: we consume what's offered without questioning what sustains us.

The cable disconnected from the wall, the fish forgetting its previous meal in moments, me standing in an apartment that echoed with riddles I'd never solved. The sphinx's prophecy: sometimes what you can't figure out isn't a puzzle to be solved, but a person who needed you to stop trying.
