The Unraveling

The coaxial cable had been fraying for months—much like everything else in Mara's thirty-seventh year. She lay on the beige carpet of her apartment, staring up at the television mounted on the wall, watching pixels fracture and reform in a digital dance of intermittent connection. Another metaphor she didn't need right now.

Her phone buzzed. Greg. Again. Three missed calls since lunch. She could almost hear his voice—smooth, practiced, full of empty reassurances about how the merger would stabilize their department. How everything would be fine. How she should just trust the process.

Mara rolled onto her side, catching her reflection in the darkened screen. Her hair, once a source of pride—thick, dark, professional—now fell in limp strands that seemed to embody her exhaustion. Stress shedding, her doctor had called it, prescribing vitamin D supplements and suggesting she 'take it easy.' As if her nervous system had an off switch.

The interview at Sphinx Technologies was tomorrow. She'd been headhunted on LinkedIn two weeks ago—cryptic messages, no job description, just an invitation to discuss 'opportunities for someone with her particular skillset.' The recruiter had been sphinx-like herself, offering only riddles when asked about the role. 'Some questions don't have answers yet,' she'd said. 'Some positions require constructing the answer yourself.'

Greg's last text appeared on her screen: *We need to talk about your future here.*

Mara thought about the vitamin bottle on her bathroom counter—twenty years of supplements and exercise and mindfulness apps, and she'd still ended up here, dissolving into someone she no longer recognized. Maybe some nutrients couldn't be swallowed.

She reached for the cable connection and twisted it tighter. The picture sharpened for a moment—bright, clear, painfully vivid—before dissolving again into static and shadow.

Some things weren't meant to be fixed. Some things were meant to end.

Mara deleted Greg's messages without reading them and opened her email. There was a message from Sphinx Technologies, subject line: *Your riddle awaits.*

She began to type her response.
