The Unfinished Dinner

The papaya sat on the counter, its mottled skin like a bruise that wouldn't heal. Elena had bought it three days ago, thinking perhaps its sweetness might salvage what remained of her marriage, but now it only mocked her from the kitchen island.

"You need to eat something," Marcus said, his voice gentle in that way that made her want to scream. He pushed the spinach toward her, leaves glistening with oil and garlic. "You're wasting away."

Elena looked at her friend—her former friend, rather—who sat across from them. Sarah's hair was different now. Shorter. Darker. The kind of dramatic change women made after affairs or divorces or revelations that shattered their understanding of themselves. Sarah had come to dinner under the guise of catching up, but Elena had known the moment she walked in what this was really about.

"The spinach is excellent," Sarah said, too bright, too careful. She touched her new hair, a nervous tic Elena had never noticed before. Or maybe she had. Maybe she'd noticed everything and simply refused to see it.

Marcus reached across the table and squeezed Elena's hand. His thumb grazed her wedding ring. "Sarah was just telling us about her promotion."

"Yes," Elena said. "Congratulations."

"Thank you." Sarah's smile faltered. She looked between them, something like terror in her eyes. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you both about something. About why I really came tonight."

The papaya continued its silent accusation. Elena thought about the weeks Marcus had been working late, the vague explanations, the distance growing between them like a tumor. She'd blamed his job, the stress, the monotony of fifteen years together.

"I can't do this anymore," Sarah whispered. "I can't sit here and pretend."

Marcus withdrew his hand.

"I'm in love with him," Sarah said to her plate. "I have been for months."

Elena stood up. The spinach lay untouched on her plate. "I'm going to cut the papaya," she said. "It's finally ripe."
