The Unfiltered Friday
Maya's iphone buzzed against her lunch tray, vibrating with the weight of forty-two unread notifications. She'd spent twenty minutes positioning her hair just right—curling the front pieces to frame her face, leaving the rest in that perfectly messy cascade that looked effortless but required three different products and a tutorial she'd watched at midnight.
"You gonna stare at it or actually eat?" Lena leaned across the cafeteria table, raising an eyebrow. "Your salad's gonna wilt, and you'll miss your chance to be aesthetic."
Maya rolled her eyes but finally looked down. The spinach leaves were already starting to look sad and droopy, but she dutifully stabbed at them. Across the room, Jason and his friends were laughing at something on a phone screen, his orange backpack slung over the back of his chair. He looked good. He always looked good.
"He's looking over here," Lena whispered dramatically.
Maya's heart did that stupid flutter thing it always did. She smoothed her hair, checked her reflection in her phone screen—still good, still presentable. Then she smiled, just a little, to practice.
Lena's face went weirdly blank.
"What?" Maya asked, still smiling.
"You have..." Lena gestured vaguely at her own teeth. "Like, green stuff. Definitely spinach."
Maya froze. All that work—all the hair products, the outfit planning, the careful social media curation—and now THIS. She'd been smiling at Jason with literal spinach in her teeth like some sort of vegetable-filled gremlin. She grabbed her phone, flipping the camera to selfie mode, and there it was: a bright green fleck, front and center, mocking her entire existence.
"I'm never leaving this house again," Maya muttered, wiping furiously at her teeth with a napkin.
"But wait, look." Lena pointed across the room. "He's still looking. And he's... grinning?"
And sure enough, Jason was watching her, actually grinning, and then he did this ridiculous little wave with his orange backpack still on, like he was heading to class but wanted to acknowledge her first. Not the smile of someone judging her. Not the look of someone thinking she was embarrassing.
Just... Jason. Being Jason. Who'd once tripped over his own feet in AP Bio and made a joke about "testing gravity" instead of acting like it hadn't happened.
Maya's phone buzzed again. A DM from him: "ur hair looks rly good today btw also u have spinach in ur teeth but ur still pulling it off lol"
She read it three times. Then she started laughing. Lena was cracking up too, and suddenly Maya didn't care about being perfect or aesthetic or whatever.
"Tell him to come over," Maya said, finally taking a real bite of her salad. "And if I get spinach in my teeth again, that's just... character development."
