Maya's purple hair was supposed to be the statement. The look that said, "I'm confident, I'm artsy, I'm totally not overthinking this." Instead, three weeks later, the color had faded to a weird orangish-brown that made her look like she'd been swimming in a pool of rust.
"Your hair looks... interesting," said Josh, the boy she'd been crushing on since September. They were at Emily's party, the kind where everyone stood around awkwardly holding red Solo cups until someone summoned the courage to actually dance.
"Thanks!" Maya lied, touching her hair self-consciously. "It's an intentional vintage vibe."
Josh nodded slowly, then something flashed in his eyes. Not recognition. Not amusement. Horror.
"Maya, you have..." He gestured at his own teeth, then realization hit her like a physical blow. The spinach dip. The awkward selfie she'd taken twenty minutes ago and posted to her story. The piece of green vegetation that had apparently made itself at home between her front teeth.
She grabbed her iPhone and frantically opened the front camera. Nope. There it was, bright and emerald and devastating.
"I have to go," Maya blurted, already moving toward the door. "My cat. She's... sick. Very sick."
She bolted outside and slumped against Emily's front porch, mortified. That's when she noticed it - a thick black cable snaking from the house next door. Someone had plugged their phone into Emily's outdoor outlet, probably stealing WiFi for the party. The cable stretched tight across the porch, and in her hurry, Maya's foot caught it.
Her phone flew from her hand in slow motion, landing directly in a muddy puddle with a splash that felt louder than the bass thumping inside.
"Great," she muttered, staring at her reflection in the puddle. Orange-brown hair. Spinach teeth. No phone. Basically, the holy trinity of teenage embarrassment.
"Need help?" A girl with bright blue hair leaned out the neighbor's window. She was holding an orange, peeling it casually like she hadn't just watched Maya's life fall apart.
"That's my cable," Blue-Hair said, grinning. "Sorry about stealing power. Your friend's party looked lit from over here."
Maya started laughing. She couldn't help it. The absurdity of it all - the hair disaster, the spinach, the cable, the puddle, this random girl with an orange.
"I'm Luna," the girl said, tossing a piece of orange peel to Maya. "Want to come over? We can order pizza and mock everyone at that party from a safe distance."
Maya looked at her muddy phone, then at the house full of people she'd spent weeks trying to impress. The people who'd seen her with spinach in her teeth and kept scrolling.
"Yes," Maya said, standing up. "Absolutely yes."
