The Unfiltered Dive
Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her iPhone like a lifeline. Three hours. That's how long she'd spent straightening her hair this morning, only for the humidity to turn it into a frizzy halo around her head.
"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the water, doing a backflip that made everyone cheer.
Maya forced a smile. "Just checking something!" She opened Instagram for the fiftieth time, refreshing the photo she'd posted two hours ago. Twenty-three likes. That was it. Meanwhile, Skylar's pool party selfie had already hit eighty-seven.
The anxiety coiled in her stomach like a snake. Why wasn't she having fun? This was supposed to be the party of the summer, the one everyone would talk about when school started back up next week. But instead of laughing and swimming, she was obsessively checking her reflection in the sliding glass door, making sure her hair still looked perfect.
"Maya!" Emma appeared beside her, dripping wet. "Stop being anti-social! Your hair looks fine, okay? Get in here!"
Before Maya could protest, Emma grabbed her arm. Maya's phone slipped from her fingers, hitting the concrete with a sickening crack before bouncing into the pool.
"NO!" Maya screamed, watching it sink to the bottom.
Then she was running, diving in after it without thinking. The cool water shocked her system, washing away the heat and the anxiety all at once. Her perfect hair plastered against her face. Her makeup smeared. But somehow, none of that mattered anymore.
She found her phone at the bottom, screen shattered dark. When she surfaced, sputtering and laughing, everyone was staring.
"You okay?" Jordan asked, grinning.
Maya looked at her frizzy hair, her ruined phone, her streaked mascara. Then she looked at her friends, all waiting for her real smile, not the fake one she'd been wearing all day.
"Actually?" She flipped her wet hair out of her eyes. "I'm amazing."
For the first time all summer, Maya wasn't performing. Wasn't curating. Wasn't worrying about the algorithm. She was just a girl in a pool, laughing with her friends, hair wild and heart full. Some things, she realized, couldn't be captured in a carefully filtered photo.
And honestly? That was so much better.
